It’s the same fight
the athlete, the Christian
‘You’re doing too much,’ they’ll say..
‘You’re overworked, and undernourished,’
because you don’t feed off the fat of your desires,
the indulgent mire of twisted wants
Cheesecake for lunch, and dinner,
Yes, I love cheesecake that much,
but if I ate ten of Kathy’s mini cheesecakes,
I’ll invite diabetes, rotten teeth, fat,
not to mention delayed build-up of aorta plaque.
I love the idea of sex, but if I run past God’s idea
of me, I’ll be no better than myself
the self he is repairing.
It’s a fight, yes, it is.
‘A little of this won’t kill you.’
Yes it will and it does,
as a little a day
goes a long way.
Don’t beat the air,
don’t defeat yourself by thinking that it’s easy.
Maybe others won’t respect your need to be rigid and inflexible
Those whose fleshly desires are out of control
lacking self-control…
The christian/the athlete
it’s the same fight
to wake up while it still looks like night
to crack open Bible
with pencil in hand
doing due diligence
to learn from the wise hand
of the Holy Spirit who coaches you on
and keeps you focused in the midst of your fellow runners
who diligently apply themselves
and do NOT as they feel
but run this race, with always the same spirited zeal.
trumps obstacles..
Some road races are hilly,
and the arms must be swung
to gustily get you up that one.
Some trials God allows will knock you flat
and you can’t be POSITIVE, or PROCLAIM this or that
It is only the word of God that,
like an energy gel pack,
will help you up that hill
and run slowly but steadily
with more than just your will,
but with the unction of your sword,
the wielding of will
undoes your reward.
Never go back to your will,
after you got through by grace.
Leaning on your own wisdom will not run you the race.
God is your coach,
your starter and your pace
and he marks each hurdle,
he carves a space
within the runners,
just for your leg.
Trust in him with all understanding,
in the same way that after training,
you would trust your conditioning.
His narrow road bears comfort
when you run in faith.
And sometimes as athlete,
you must wait.
You must not train,
you must recover,
lie under the cover of repair
God works this way,
in your heart, if you trust His
Holy Spirit to pierce you with chastisement,
then let him fix what you allow.
The athlete/the Cristian
who’s reward is never ‘now’
but delayed,
a prize that surpasses
earthly trophies.
The Christian/the athlete.
Success is to see the working of God’s glory.
May triumph be seen only in the telling
of a God-story
through the journey of
running the race,
keeping pace
in faith.

Be encouraged. The race is not for the swift but for those who endure to the end. Don’t be afraid or discouraged, but keep pressing forward. Many won’t understand what you are going through, been through or need to do to stay steady in the Lord, but like the diligent athlete, your reward is sure in Jesus Christ..Run for the prize.

1 Corinthians 9: 24-27
24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
