Who is this ‘Jesus’ and what exactly has he done?
Jesus says in Matthew 5:17 NLT – “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.”
So Jesus himself said it, he did not come to Earth to abolish the law that was given to Moses…on the contrary, he followed it…there were many things that he did not have to do but did as part of his Judaistic traditions (the religion of the Jews), with all its feasts, etc. He did try though to highlight that love takes pre-eminence over the law but we’ll leave that chat for another day..another post…yea.
How did he ‘accomplish’ the law’s purpose? He fulfilled it’s primary requirement by dying as a sacrifice for the sins of all the world…ok, I’m sure you’ve heard that before right, that Jesus died for our sins, but let’s look at the deeper principle existing here through the use of an analogy. It’s something like a king sending his young son, a prince, to the city of his subjects as if he is one of them. The young prince follows all the laws that he and his father instituted in the city (all the while showing the true heart behind the laws, by the way in which he lived). The prince is then put on trial and hanged in the middle of the town for the whole city’s transgressions of the same laws, although he himself broke none. His hanging further reveals that his father had purposely sent him to face judgment and punishment in order to fulfill that laws requirement. There was no way for new laws to be passed, unless the sentences under the old one were carried out in full. The sentence: the death of a sinless man. (Hebrews 9:11-28 does a good job of explaining why Jesus’ sacrifice makes it all a done deal)
Many have jeered the authentic faith of the believer who understands the true Gospel…that the way to eternal life is through and only through Jesus…and this is how God set it up..in Acts 4:12, it says. “There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” Jesus tells Thomas this very thing in John 14:6 when he says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” Everything has been placed in Jesus. The law is accomplished through his sinless life and sacrificial death (Romans 10:4, Hebrews 9:11-28) . His resurrection conquered the grave and made him the first in a new creation…a hybrid man with a physical body but God’s own spirit inside…(1 Corinthians 15: 20-22) .
So, the next post will talk about the fine art of ‘abiding’ in this Jesus, who has been made the pinnacle of his father’s purpose and glory until time* ends. [Remember that time is an earthly concept, God is not bounded by time]..
In the meantime, who do you understand Jesus to be? Who is he to you? What does he mean to you?
